The Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) publishes a two book series for handwriting instruction in English that caters to Standards 1 and 2, i.e. the first two years of primary school. Called Writing Standard, Pupil’s Book, it was granted approval by the Wizara ya Elimu, Sayansi na Teknolojia, or Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, in 2019.
Although the acknowledgment pages of both books credit the writers, editors, illustrators, and designers involved in their creation, there is no mention of the author or origin of the typeface used in the letter samples and practice sheets.
The design follows a slanted and continuous cursive style referred to as joined-up handwriting in the books. Its lowercase letters are fully joined, and have elliptical foundational shapes with medium-length looped extensions. Notably, the lowercase “f” does not reach the ascender line.
