Editorial Barcanova was founded in 1980, and it specialises in educational publications; resources for schools, teachers, and students; and children’s and adult literature. Its activities have been focused on Catalonia’s cultural and educational landscape.

The typeface used in Editorial Barcanova’s handwriting textbooks is MeMimas, developed in 1991 by José Manuel Urós of Type-Ø-Tones. According to Urós, a basic version of MeMimas was also acquired by the Generalitat de Catalunya, or the government of Catalonia, to be made available to schools and educators in the autonomous province during the 1990s. An updated version of the design, called MeMimas Pro, was released in 2016, and it offers a new set of ornate cursive capitals, additional weights (medium, bold and black), as well as slanted and dotted styles.

In general, MeMimas reproduces the Spanish vertical cursive writing approach with some modifications, such as a lower x-height, tall extensions, the letter z with descending loop, and a set of cursive numerals.
